‘…..it has become obvious that one must turn to John le Carre, John Grisham or Stieg Larsson to caputre the ludicrously, hysterically plot-filled fallout, from computers in rubbish bins to the hacking of newspaper websites. How apt that this story should unfold in the summer. It’s such excellent holiday reading. …’ [Hadley Freeman in today’s Guardian, 20.07.11]. She could not have put it better, even I was glued to the news as it unfolded, Ruport Murdoch, James Murdoch, RebekahBrooks (arrested?!), police commissioners who resigned, all on reality tv yesterday.
To top it all, in the evening there was the first installment of ‘The Hour’, wonderful drama from 1956 which could have been about today. It was only the first installment, but so promising, it is about tv news programmes, it is about bribing policemen, journalists, women in charge, in wonderfully stylish clothes. I loved every minute of it and cannot wait to see the rest.

Speaking of tv series and women in charge, have you seen the HBO series “Mildred Pierce” starring Kate Winslet? It’s a 5 part drama about the struggles of MIldred… I only saw the first two parts, can’t wait to see the rest. You won’t be disappointed 🙂

Hi Ally – I missed the Mildred Pierce 😦 – read some excellent reviews though and wonder how I can catch up with it?
By the way, has your book arrived? I’ve been running around a bit, but will pop into the postoffice if you haven’t, just to see if they can trace it.

Hi Corri! The book is not here. I got the other one I won from Bellezza yesterday. She sent it on the 15th from the US. As for your book, the post office says that it’s not with them, and they can’t do anything unless I provide them with some registration number and date of sending… I have no idea what the problem might be. I have been receiving books from the Book Depository for three years and no book has been lost… but, there is a beginning in everything, unfortunately for this case 😦
As for Mildred Pierce, I am sending you an email 🙂

The news certainly seems stranger than fiction these days.
